Balmore to C5 Main

Start Date

Finish Date

Estimated Cost

September 2002 February 2004 £5 Million

Description of Works:

This route consists of twin 900 mm diameter ductile iron pipes, linking the existing Water Treatment Works at Balmore to the existing 36" (900 mm) cast iron C5 Main at Bardowie Loch, adjacent to Craigmaddie Road.  The route is approximately 2 km in length.

This new main provides a treated water supply to some 140,000 customers in the East of Glasgow.  This new supply is made possible by the introduction of the Strathblane Cross Connection which transfers a proportion of Loch Katrine Water to Balmore Water Treatment Works.

The pipelines between Balmore Water Treatment Works and the existing C5 main have been completed.  Re-instatement has been carried out over the summer season and progress has been assisted by the favourable weather.  Final re-instatement is programmed for completion by Spring 2004.

Gleeson's Newspaper Article

The connection into the C5 was started and completed over a 48 hour period on 19 and 20 August 2003.  The intrusive operations to form the connection to the 36" diameter pipe was successfully carried out without any disruption to the 140,000 customers supplied by the C5 main.

Pressure testing and disinfection of the new twin pipeline has been completed during September 2003.
